Observability platform protocol compatibility and differentiation pain points
Problem
Users of open-source observability platforms face protocol limitations (e.g., JSON-only support vs protobuf), requiring workarounds like proxies; simultaneously, the market shows high comparison intent against existing solutions like VictoriaMetrics, ClickHouse, and TimescaleDB, indicating unclear positioning and differentiation.
Pain points
- JSON-only protocol support with no protobuf, requiring proxy workarounds
- Significant memory, query performance, and I/O trade-offs compared to VictoriaMetrics, ClickHouse, etc.
- Lack of clear differentiation versus Iceberg, TimescaleDB, and other TSDBs, making evaluation difficult for users
Questions to verify
- Would adding protobuf support significantly impact your adoption decision?
- How do you currently evaluate and compare performance trade-offs between different TSDB/observability platforms?
- Do you anticipate introducing AI agents into your workflow? How would that affect your observability needs?

Low level how does this compare to Victoriametrics, you can get the high cardinality with clickhouse and other columnar dbs but the tradeoff is more ram usage, slower queries, io, etc

The open source version doesn't accept protobufs, but does accept JSON.

In Parseable, every labels stay as columns in the data instead of becoming a large long-lived per-series index like many TSDBs.
